Hospitality & Charisms

  • Would you like to find a way to use the charisms you’ve been given?
  • What are charisms?
  • Has God given you the gift of hospitality?
  • What is hospitality in a Catholic sense?

Hospitality is extraordinary ability to extend caring and sharing to persons (strangers) beyond one’s intimate circle to demonstrate and establish the unlimited and inclusive companionship of Christ. A concern for the comfort of others may be a manifestation of the gift of hospitality. This gift involves having a knack for making people at ease, enjoying being in the presence of strangers and a welcoming spirit.

What are Charisms?

St. Paul says, “Each has his own special gift [charism] from God” (1 Cor 7:7). Each of us has received the power of the Holy Spirit in a unique way to serve others. Spiritual gifts are not private possessions: “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good” (1 Cor 12:7). We are built for community, and the power of the Spirit is given to me for your sake and to you for my sake. My charism is meant to build you up, and your charism should build me up. Charisms are designed by God “for building up the body of Christ” Eph 4:12).

“Charisms are therefore graces bestowed by the Holy Spirit on certain members of the faithful to prepare them to contribute to the common good of the Church.”

~ St. John Paul II, March 16, 1987
